Importer-Exporter Code

If you are into a business that needs importing and exporting of goods, then you must have an Importer Exporter Code.
Every business with import and export of goods needs an Importer Exporter Code (IEC), without which you cannot import or export anything. To apply, it's not necessary for you to be a registered entity, you could apply as an individual. To mention, IEC does not apply to technology and services. But this is essential for things for which international trade is restricted, like nuclear weapons and automatic guns. The IEC is a ten digit code and has a permanent validity. The IEC is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

Things to know

National Validity

The IEC is valid anywhere within the county, in every branches or factory. It must be quoted when your goods pass through customs and when you send money abroad or receive the same from abroad.

No Filings Apply

The IEC a code. Once you get it, you can start your import and export. There is no need to file the transactions carried out under this code or pay any taxes.

IEC Process

What documents are needed?

• The number of copies for identity, PAN cards, address proofs and 4 passport-sized photographs of the proprietor/partners/directors.
• Private limited companies must submit the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and Certificate of Incorporation
• Partnerships must submit Partnership Agreement
• Details of entity's current account and exporter type
• A copy in company's letterhead might be needed
